Yellowhammer (Cul-de-sac)
This original mixed media artwork is inspired by the Yellowhammer species, whose population numbers have declined due to the reduction in food during the winter period. This is a result of agricultural intensification (ploughing crops, straw and weeds rather than leaving until the following year). This practice has impacted on survival rates of yellowhammers according to The British Trust for Ornithology.
The red triangle pointing downwards highlights the red conservation status of the yellowhammer. The yellow strip of paint shows the length of the species, with the title alluding to a "dead end" in terms of the species experiencing a reduction in suitable nesting and feeding sites.
This framed painting uses acrylic paint and painted paper on primed plywood panel.
Framed in a wooden walnut coloured frame with D rings and cord. Size: 30.4 (w) x38cm (L).
